How WeWork India is Building an Equitable Workplace

WeWork India believes their people are the foundation of their success. They have built a high-performance culture that is inclusive, collaborative, and deeply aligned with their values. By creating an environment where individuals feel respected, heard, and empowered, they enable their teams to deliver their best every day.

WeWork India’s diversity metrics are industry-leading and the company is successfully creating an equitable experience with 55% men and 45% women representation*.

At a leadership level, it is a 34% women representation* and 5.7% of the organisation has self-declared themselves as part of the LGBTQIA+ community*.

Psychological safety at WeWork India is emerging as a genuine performance driver, with 91% of women and 87% of men reporting positive sentiment on this front. Gender fairness is also strongly felt across the organization, with 97% of women and 95% of men affirming that people are treated fairly regardless of gender.

This sense of fairness translates into strong advocacy and pride: 96% of women and 95% of men are proud to tell others they work at WeWork India, while 90% of women and 91% of men feel a genuine sense of pride in what they’ve accomplished here. Professional growth is similarly well-supported, with 88% of women and 91% of men affirming access to training and development opportunities.

These noteworthy accomplishments are an outcome of thoughtfully designed and implemented policies, practices & programs. Below are several representative instances:

  1. WeWork India’s medical insurance policy is built in partnership with Plum to support the modern workforce. With an INR 6,00,000 health insurance cover effective from Day 1, they recognise diverse family structures and extend medical insurance benefits to same-sex partners and differently abled children. The policy covers gender reassignment surgery, autism therapy and hospitalisation coverage for genetic disorders. Trust in this system is validated by a 91% cashless claim settlement rate (within 0–3 hours) and an overall NPS of 86, allowing employees to focus on work rather than navigating uncertainty.
  2. In partnership with KLAY, employees gain access to a nationwide network of premium daycare centers, complemented by at-home nanny services tailored for children aged 6 months to 2 years, ensuring quality care from the earliest stages of development. Understanding that every family’s needs are unique, the policy extends beyond the KLAY network, offering parents the freedom to choose their preferred childcare provider with reimbursement support.
  3. WeWork India offers Women’s Wellness Leave across the country and recognises that various stages of the menstruation cycle can affect individuals differently, and provides one dedicated day of leave each month for rest and recovery. All women employees, transgender and non-binary employees who menstruate are eligible for women’s wellness leave.
  4. Parents who are primary caregivers of infants, across all family structures and identities, are eligible to up to 6-month work-from-home arrangements following the conclusion of parental leave.
  5. WeWork India’s learning philosophy is straightforward: every employee is a student for life. They invest across three modes: hands-on experience in a flat, ownership-oriented organisation; coaching and mentoring; and structured training including AI literacy and managerial excellence programmes.

Every year, WeWork India launches a targeted Learning Calendar engineered to sharpen skills and drive measurable business impact. Its curated programs are built directly from talent reviews, leadership insights, and industry trends.

All employees receive INR 30,000 INR Personal Growth Credits each year to invest in their career development and overall wellness. Additionally, the E-Learning Reimbursement Program encourages continuous learning and skill development by supporting employees in pursuing online courses aligned to their career development up to INR 6,000 per financial year, making learning both flexible and accessible.

Since launching the Further Education Program in 2021, 56 employees have expanded their skills and accelerated their development through part-time professional development programmes. The program continues to build future-ready capabilities and empower people to grow their careers every financial year.

Behind the IPO: A Culture Win

WeWork India’s commitment to equity extended beyond policy and into one of its biggest business milestones. As the company prepared for its 2025 listing, the boldest act of leadership wasn’t just filing for an IPO it was the deliberate choice to lead with equity & fairness at a moment of major transition, ensuring employees didn’t just witness the IPO, but owned it. This spirit of shared ownership was made tangible through a comprehensive study resulting in additional ESOPs awarded, while dedicated training sessions helped demystify governance and compliance for employees at every level.

The IPO was the biggest testament and key outcome of the company values in action – doing the right thing, serving members first, winning together, getting it done, building for tomorrow and being entrepreneurial.

High-performing talent from across the organization drove collaborative initiatives critical to WeWork India’s transition from a privately held company to a publicly listed one. The team’s ownership and accountability were on full display as they filed the DRHP (Draft Red Herring Prospectus) in just 4 months, well ahead of typical timelines, an enterprise-wide masterclass in disciplined execution and shared ownership.

  • Sneh joined WeWork India in September 2018. As a Community Lead, she was managing the opening of one building. Three promotions and seven years later, she leads two large markets of Pune and NCR, as the Associate Director, Community.

“My journey at WeWork India has been about more than just scaling buildings; it’s been about the company’s trust in me to lead through both hyper-growth and global challenges. I wouldn’t have made it this far without the people here – the constant learning from my team members and the diverse perspectives of our leadership and external stakeholders have made this growth possible. They are the ones who made the journey easier and the milestones meaningful.”

GPTW Celebrations

Ajinkya joined WeWork India in January 2019 as a Community Manager before transitioning into the Sales team as a Sales Trainer. Today, as a Senior Manager in the People team, he has taken on the role of a People Business Partner, bringing with him a wealth of cross-functional experience and a deep understanding of the business.

“It has easily been the most transformative professional experience of my life. This isn’t just a workplace; it’s an ecosystem that fosters genuine personal and professional growth, authenticity and financial independence. To Karan Virwani and the leadership team: thank you for creating an organisation where ‘wow’ moments happen daily. Here are a few defining milestones from my journey:

Accelerated Professional Growth: Just six months into a new role, I was entrusted with opening and managing the P&L of our largest building, Vaishnavi Signature. This trust pushed me out of my comfort zone and set the stage for an incredible career trajectory, evolving from Community Manager to Sales Training Manager, and ultimately to a leadership role overseeing L&D, culture, and inclusion within the People team.

True LGBTQ+ Inclusivity: When I adopted my son, WeWork India defied rigid societal norms by granting me six months of paid primary caregiver leave. To ensure a smooth transition back to work, their partnership with KLAY Preschools provided a fully funded nanny, enabling me to balance domestic duties and thrive in my career.

Holistic Family Welfare: The company’s comprehensive insurance covers my entire family, including my same-sex partner, my son, my father, and me – backed by exceptional employee assistance programs.

Unwavering Mental Health Support: During a challenging battle with depression in 2018-19, WeWork’s access to free, one-on-one counselling sessions was a literal lifeline, proving that employee well-being is a core value, not a corporate buzzword.

WeWork India has given me recognition, confidence, and a sense of belonging that surpasses standard corporate bonds. A multitude of thank-yous will never fully capture my gratitude for this incredible organisation.”

How WeWork India Co-Creates its Culture

At WeWork India, Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) play a key role in fostering inclusion, belonging and community across the organisation. Each ERG is led by passionate employees and sponsored by a member of the executive leadership team, who provides mentorship, guidance, and advocacy. ERGs empower employees to create real impact through initiatives such as policy development, training, events and partnerships. The ERGs include:

  1. Enabled by We: Empowers the Persons with Disabilities (PwD) community through advocacy, education, and accessible workplace initiatives. WeWork India’s CEO leads by example as the sponsor of the Enabled by We ERG, championing diversity and inclusion (D&I) efforts at the highest level.
  2. Parents of We: Builds a supportive network for parents and caregivers to connect, share experiences, and access resources that make parenting easier at work and beyond.
  3. Satrangi: Fosters inclusion for LGBTQIA+ employees and allies, celebrating diverse identities and creating a safe, affirming space for all.
  4. Wellbeing: Promotes holistic wellness through programs that enhance physical health, mental resilience, financial education and emotional balance.
  5. Women of We: Empowers women through mentorship, learning opportunities, and initiatives that drive personal and professional growth.
  6. Tails of We: Advocates for animal welfare by creating a compassionate community committed to caring for and protecting all animals.

WeWork India’s annual Culture Jam, a talent development initiative, places employees at the centre of solving real, high-impact business challenges, moving from ideation into execution with clear executive sponsorship and accountability.

Employees share, “Our CEO fosters a culture of transparency, openly sharing strategic challenges to transform potential hurdles into collective, high-stakes missions.”

In Year 1, we empowered top talent to brainstorm and pitch solutions to CXOs on key themes such as Accountability, High Performance, Innovation, Recognition, Member-First, and Common Purpose, shaping how WeWork India operates today. In Year 2, we built on this through design thinking, developing and prototyping solutions before pitching ideas. Initiatives such as Empathy Coach (An AI-driven Empathy Coach that turns every employee into a hospitality expert training minds to feel before they act, at every level), OKR Compass (Internal tool that keeps everyone moving in the same direction by connecting daily tasks to key organisational goals), and Lifecycle AI (AI-powered intelligence for continuous member context across WeWork India touchpoints) emerged from this process, driving operational efficiency, member satisfaction, and business impact.

A pivotal cultural transformation occurred by intentionally shifting managers’ mindsets from transactional supervision and delegation to transformational coaching. After identifying key leadership gaps through comprehensive Talent Reviews, WeWork India launched targeted capability-building programs, including foundational and advanced leadership modules like Elevate and Elevate+, as well as focused training in Project Management, Executive Presence, and Strategic Thinking. This strategic intervention yielded an extraordinary score of 89/100 under the driver “My Manager” on their AI-enabled engagement platform. Beyond boosting employee sentiment, this capability-building ecosystem directly empowered the business to achieve its critical OKRs: accelerating revenue growth through sales enablement, strengthening compliance and workplace safety via rigorous POSH and Designated Person training, driving operational efficiency through AI training, and ultimately elevating overall employee retention and performance.

How WeWork India leverages the partnership with Great Place To Work:

  • Tracking progress on culture investments: Insights by Great Place To Work helped confirm that initiatives such as Culture Jam, ERGs, learning programs, and recognition redesign directly addressed the needs employees expressed. Repeat slicing and periodic reviews helped evaluate whether actions moved the needle e.g., eNPS rising to +71, strong leadership scores, rising inclusion index, and improved career development sentiment.
  • Deeper Segmentation Exposed Blind Spots: Breaking data down by tenure, role level, city, and function revealed differences that weren’t visible in aggregated results, especially in areas like coaching, recognition, and collaboration. WeWork India is proud of their revamped recognition programme that is personalised, decentralised, and timely. Backed by internal scores, external research, they heard from employees from different generations across levels & functions to co-create what recognition could truly mean.
  • Clear mapping of areas that need immediate action: Segmented data flagged gaps in how well employees understood their complete compensation and benefits package, beyond just fixed pay. This prompted WeWork India to roll out structured Total Rewards training for managers and employees, helping demystify variable pay, benefits, and perks and ensuring the full value of the employment offering is visible and appreciated, not just assumed.
  • Leadership Alignment Through Structured Debriefs: Great Place To Work’s facilitated presentations created a shared understanding of cultural strengths and improvement areas. This ensured senior leaders aligned quickly on priorities and accountability. The leadership presentations and granular data slicing further helped them move from broad assumptions to precise, evidence-based action.
Priti's Headshot

We partnered with Great Place To Work because we believe that a truly people-first organisation listens as rigorously as it acts. WeWork India uses a structured set of listening mechanisms to gather feedback across the employee lifecycle. This is complemented by the GPTW survey with deeper insights translated into clearly defined, owner-led actions at the leadership level. GPTW helped us understand our people's lived experiences and supported our ambition to build one of India's most trusted, inclusive, and high-performing workplaces anchored to a global benchmark used by leading organisations worldwide.

The Next of Kin Hiring initiative further reflected the organization’s value of empathy by providing employment opportunities to family members affected by death or permanent disability.

The Hire Right initiative was named Runner-Up at the BUPA GROW PLT 2025 Awards for its impact on hiring quality. By reducing unconscious bias through structured selection and better candidate alignment, the program improved workforce stability and reduced early attrition by 7%.

These actions reinforced a simple but powerful message: employee feedback mattered.

Trust as a Business Multiplier

The outcomes of Niva Bupa’s culture journey extend beyond employee engagement metrics.

The organization achieved 95%+ First Impression Survey scores year after year while reducing early attrition by 7% and overall attrition by 9%.

It earned Great Place To Work Certification for five consecutive years and secured recognition among India’s Best Workplaces™ and the Top 25 Best Workplaces in BFSI.

Niva Bupa Success Journey

At the same time, business performance continued to strengthen. Niva Bupa recorded 32.1% year-on-year growth, expanded its retail health market share to 9.4%, maintained a claims settlement ratio of 92.4%, and successfully completed its IPO journey.

These outcomes reinforce an important lesson.

Trust is not separate from business performance. It fuels it.

Organizations that listen deeply, act consistently, and invest in meaningful employee experiences create environments where people are willing to contribute more, stay longer, innovate faster, and serve customers better.

Niva Bupa’s story shows something simple- but often missed:

  • When people feel heard, they stay.
  • When they see action, they trust.
  • When they trust, performance follows.
